BATTLE OF AUSTERLITZ RE-ENACTMENT - AUSTERLITZ, NEW YORK
15-16 August, 2009:
At its Old Austerlitz Village location, the Austerlitz Historical Society
hosts both Canadian and American members of the Napoleonic Brigade
during a weekend filled with drills, skirmishes and traditional
encampment activities on the scenic 15-acre site. The excitement and drama
of the re-enacted 1805 Battle of Austerlitz, also known as the
Battle of the Three Emperors, is especially enhanced by the highly
varied, colourful and ornate uniforms of the infantry and cavalry units
which represent the French, Russian and Austrian involvement.

Easily available natural materials such as straw
are used to construct tent-like shelters in the field.
While in the encampment, the duties of daily life, like cleaning
muskets and preparing food, are routine.

A sapper (engineer), who is not required to carry a musket, is surrounded
by combatants in a defensive formation.
Father Joseph assists a wounded French soldier away from his fallen comrades.
Back in the encampment, the same soldier is in a particularly jolly
mood following a miraculous recovery.
Looking skyward, Father Joseph is grateful for the number of divine
interventions he has facilitated during the battle.
While serving both an ornamental and practical function, the tail of a
horse adorns this cavalryman's helmet as its texture serves to resist the slash
of a sword to the neck.
